What Are The Minimum Levels Of Education And Experience?

To become a transcriber with LegalProofs, you need to pass our transcriber exam. To do so, you need a decent grasp of English spelling and grammar as well as basic computer skills (like working with a word processor and the internet).
The LegalProofs team consists of people from all kinds of education levels and backgrounds. Familiarity with the legal field can be of use to you but is not necessary. Our transcribers benefit from on-the-job training and live support.

Does It Matter Where I Live?

LegalProofs accepts online workers from the US as well as other countries around the world.
Due to current laws in California and Massachusetts, we cannot accept applications from people living in these states.

Are Transcribers Employees Of LegalProofs?

Transcribers work for LegalProofs as freelancers. Freelancers are independent contractors. Those in the US will be sent a 1099 form to file their taxes every year. If you don’t know how that works, don’t worry. It’s not that complicated.

What Are The Working Hours?

You choose how much and when you work. Hours are flexible. Whether you transcribe full time or only in your free hours around other responsibilities, it’s up to you. LegalProofs’ minimum activity requirement is at least one transcript per month. If for any reason you will be unable to work for a month or longer, you can ask for a leave of absence so your account won’t get disabled.

What, When, And Where Will I Get Paid?

LegalProofs has multiple transcription projects, each with their own pay rate. You will always be informed of the pay rate before you start working on any job. Pay is per audio hour or per page. How long it takes to transcribe an audio hour or a page differs from person to person. Experienced transcribers will take about four actual hours to accurately transcribe one audio hour or 40 to 50 pages. Less experienced transcribers may take more time. Payments are done on a weekly basis. You need a PayPal account to receive payment.

What Equipment Do I Need To Transcribe?

Transcribers need a computer or laptop, a pair of earphones, and a stable internet connection.
Various software programs are available for transcription and word processing. There are both free and paid options. We can help you find what works best for you.
Some transcribers like to work with a foot pedal. Transcription foot pedals may make your work easier, but they’re not required.

Are There Growth Opportunities For Transcribers With LegalProofs?

Transcribers who consistently turn in quality work are invited to become proofers. They proof the work of newer transcribers and ensure it’s up to standards. Proofers have access to more and better-paying work than transcribers.
LegalProofs is a dynamic and growing company because the transcription landscape is constantly developing. Well-performing transcribers are always first to be considered for new projects and other opportunities.
